Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 Kaiju film that will be the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. It will serve as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, and will be the fourth chapter in the Godzilla franchise.

After a tumultuous production process, Godzilla vs. Kong was initially scheduled for release on May 29, 2020, before being moved forward to March 13, 2020, and then again to November 20, 2020, and finally to May 21, 2021. It was then rescheduled for release on March 26, 2021, before finally hitting cinemas on March 31, 2021 in the United States of America. The film was also available for viewing on HBO Max until April 30, 2021, where it could be seen in real time.

The film is directed by Adam Wingard and produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers. Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the script, which was adapted from a narrative by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. This book was written by Borenstein and Dougherty as well as Shields. It's been five years since Godzilla and Kong faced off in King of the Monsters, and now, following Ghidorah's rampage, they face off again.

Godzilla and Kong are the only active Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla and Ghidorah battled and killed each other for control in 2019. A storm generated by Ghidorah combined with the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island has caused the climate to become unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulates the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him with company and company.

However, when Jia pays a visit to Kong and extends a doll to him, the Titan notices and promptly throws a tree at it, realizing that he is stuck within the biodome.

Nathan Lind is a former scientist at Monarch who now thinks that the Titans live in the Hollow Earth, an underground world that is below the Earth and where they hide. Lind will help Apex's CEO, Walter Simmons, find a powerful energy source in the Hollow Earth. Nathan is afraid at first because his brother tried to go into the Hollow Earth, but a strong anti-gravity field inside the tunnel killed him. After Walter tells him that Apex has made and built Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which can withstand the gravity field's pressure, he finally agrees.

Ilene Andrews, a Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother, joins Nathan on Skull Island with his plan to utilize Kong as a navigator to direct them to the energy source since Skull Island is no longer able to hold him and enable him to thrive. Ilene first rejects the task, but when Nathan convinces her that this is the only way to end Godzilla's rampage and locate Kong a new home, she agrees.

Boarding a customized boat with a light-sedated Kong locked up to keep him from escaping. That night, Kong gets restless and anxious, but Jia soothes him by enabling her and Kong to hold fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home", surprising Ilene. The following day, Ilene tells Nathan how she adopted Jia when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the sole survivor since Kong protected her, leading to their relationship.

The Titan arrives and attacks the soldiers before causing the barge to capsize, almost drowning Kong and the other passengers on board. As a result, Nathan frees Kong by cutting the chains that bind him, allowing him to fight Godzilla under the surface for long enough to swim up to the top and overturn the barge, saving the lives of the passengers. Then Godzilla leaps onto the deck of a nearby aircraft carrier to engage in combat with Kong. In order for Kong to successfully force Godzilla back into the ocean, fighter planes must properly distract Godzilla. King Kong rushes from the aircraft carrier in order to dodge the atomic explosion, but Godzilla grabs him by the tail and drags him into the ocean, where he plans to drown the Titan.

Seeing that Kong can't live in the cold and that they can't return him to Skull Island, Nathan asks Ilene whether Kong would go if he believes there are others like him down there, and she tells Jia to persuade Kong that his family may potentially be down there, causing the Titan to enter the tunnel.

There, the three disembark and discover Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical version of Godzilla operated by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's top technological officer Ren Serizawa. Walter immediately releases a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to test Mechagodzilla's strength against the Titans once the mecha is activated. The beast is on the point of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and imprisoned by Mechagodzilla. Using a strong red energy beam, Mechagodzilla cleaves the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. The test is, however, cut short as the mecha quickly turns down owing to power supply limits.

After that, Kong and Nathan's crew continue on their way to a large stone temple built by Kong's forefathers. They discover ruins of an old fight between Kong's and Godzilla's races, and Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dead Godzilla's race member's dorsal plate before sitting on a gigantic throne. Kong discovers that the same power source can replenish the axe as Nathan's crew discovers it for Mechagodzilla. Despite Ilene's protests, Maia and the Apex team utilize spider-like drones to collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia's guards fire at Nathan's squad, but Kong violently defends them. Godzilla, sensing the machine's activation, goes directly for Hong Kong.

Godzilla can't fly, which is a good thing. Maia and her crew attempt to leave their HEAV, but Kong snatches it on their way out and crushes it in his hand, killing Maia and her crew inside.

Godzilla and Kong both recuperate and return to their feet, with Godzilla seeking for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching atop a tower. Kong distracts Godzilla by throwing a construction crane into a building, allowing him to ambush him from above and place the Titan in a chokehold, intending to strangle him, but Godzilla breaks free and unleashes his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. Even though Kong has been conquered and imprisoned by Godzilla, the latter screams defiantly at the latter in defiance.

Godzilla shows mercy and spares his rival's life, as if impressed by Kong's tenacity and prowess, before walking away, leaving Kong alive but badly injured, as he succumbs to commotio cordis.

Walter instructs Ren to unleash Mechagodzilla against Godzilla at the Apex base. Walter rejects Ren's pleadings and coldly orders him to start the mecha, despite his warnings about the new Hollow Earth energy source. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are all brought to Walter by Apex security for entering the headquarters and being captured by the guards. For all of this, Madison blames the Titans of unleashing Godzilla, but Walter boldly replies that it was his decision to let humans to fight back against Godzilla that led to this conflict in the first place.

While Josh and Bernie attempt in vain to remotely deactivate the rampaging robot and Madison attempts to summon Mark for assistance, Godzilla, despite having grown tired from his earlier battle against Kong, and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both fire their energy beams at each other, which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to gain the upper hand, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and seriously beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia detects a slowing of his pulse. Ilene explains that they can't generate a large enough charge to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, remembering Maia's earlier comment about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

Kong wakes to see Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battling before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade him that Godzilla isn't truly his opponent. Though Kong doesn't believe her at first as he continues to witness Godzilla being overrun by Mechagodzilla, Jia explains the reality to him that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. After a while, Kong ultimately accepts and sets aside his hatred before marching into combat to aid Godzilla while repairing his dislocated arm.

The robot Mechagodzilla is about to fire a red energy beam down Godzilla's neck when Kong dives on top of the robot and deflect the beam into the air, thereby saving Godzilla's life. Following the realization that King Kong saved his life and realizing that he is not an adversary, Godzilla joins forces with King Kong to fight against the mechanized monster Mechagodzilla.

They succeed in turning the tide by combining their forces, but the robot is much more powerful and eventually defeats them. It is revealed that Kong had previously lost his axe when fighting Godzilla, and he reclaims it from the ruins and tries to use it against Mechagodzilla, but his weapon is rendered ineffectual due to the loss of its charge. With nothing left to do, Bernie takes out a flask of booze and suggests that everyone have a drink. However, Josh, having an idea, takes the flask out of Bernie's hand and pours the contents of the drink all over the control panel, short-circuiting Mechagodzilla's controls and allowing Godzilla and Kong to regroup and retake the upper hand.

The prevailing consensus is that Godzilla vs. Kong is a good movie. On Rotten Tomatoes as of April 16, 2021, the film has 341 reviews, 254 of which are fresh, and a "Tomatometer" with a 74% certified Fresh score. Critics have agreed that Godzilla vs. Kong delivers on its title, removing human drama and character development in favor of the sheer spectacle of huge monsters battling it out.
